Organizer don't open || Organizer quits unexpectedly || Not able to use Organizer in Adobe Photoshop Elements

We have been seeing various problems where Organizer is quitting unexpectedly whether we open it from Welcome Screen or Editor. Many forum topics have mentioned this and recently one of engineers from Adobe has shared a solution at http://forums.adobe.com/message/4080817#4080817, which has worked for many folks. So we thought of sharing this for users of this blog if you face something like this future.

This problem has a very simple solution.

1.  Go to  <root>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Elements Oganizer/9.0/Organizer.

2. Locate
contacts.xml file present at mentioned location.

3. Rename this contact.xml.

4. Relaunch the Organizer after renaming this file.

Hope you would be able to Organizer after these. Please do leave comments if you have a similar problem and still not able to resolve.

New Features in 10th Version of Adobe Photoshop Elements - Object Search

For me Elements Organizer is main component, so starting with new features in Elements Organizer 10.0. Object Search is one thing which I found really very helpful and especially users like me who have large catalogs with thousands of files. E.g.- It will be really helpful for me to figure out photographs of my dog, which are clicked over the years.

Let's go through actual workflow provided in Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 -

Not able to find my photographs in Adobe Photoshop Elements Organizer !!!

Recently I saw one post on Adobe Forums where one of our elements friend was not able to find his files which were imported two months back. Since there can be multiple reasons of files missing in a catalog, so it was not an easy task to guess what all could have caused this. Here I would want to share few basic things that give information about files in a catalog, how they are shown in different views, count, hiding some particular files etc.

We shall discuss more about View Menu with screen-shots below..This image shows folder-view and in folder we only see files from a particular folder which is selected on left side.At times we mark files as hidden inside Organizer and there is no relation between the status of file on Windows... So in case there are hidden files in Organizer, they can be seen by checking option - 'Show All Files'...There is another option where we can filter a particular type of file format. Eg. - There may be a need to see only videos in Catalog, just go to View Menu and uncheck all except Video. IN case you want to see, check all of them !!!I will try to add other variable things in Organizer which can impact visibility of files inside a particular Catalog !!

Size limit in Elements Organizer !!!

Many times folks see some problems with thumb-nailing in Organizer. Sometimes, its problem with thumbnail generation for multiple photographs in one go and this is fixable by simple update Thumbnail functionality under Edit Menu or file context-Menu. But if you have created something in Photoshop or Edtior and import into Elements Organizer, problem can be different. It seems Elements Organizer has some limit for thumbnail generation and it didn't work for my files having dimensions about 8K*8K. Following are some of the results from what I have tried on my machine with Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.0 -

Moving from one machine to other when all files are on External Hard Drive and don't want to go through Backup/Restore route

Today one of the user asked on forum about transferring Organizer metadata to a new machine without Backup/Restore because all the files are already on an external hard drive which can be used with new computer.

It's not a recommended workflow and always recommended way is to backup and restore from one machine to other.

Anyway, if you want to try this route, please make sure that drive head on new computer is same as that of old computer. E.g.- If this hard drive is detected as E drive on old computer then is should be detected as E on new computer. Even if that's not the case, one more step will make things work for you.

Steps -

1. Launch Organizer on your old computer
2. Open the catalog which you want to transfer to new computer
3. Go to Help Menu and select 'System Info'
4. Copy path for 'Catalog Location :'
5. Open this location in Windows Explorer
6. Copy all the files/folders from this location and move it to new computer
7. Launch Organizer and open this catalog now by keeping USB HDD connected.
8. Try some operation on files in Organizer and see if things are working.

If drive head is different on new computer, reconnect all your files correctly and go ahead !!!

Try this and leave your comment about the experiences...

If you are also seeing some crashes on LION with Adobe Photoshop Elements. Try this workaround and share your experiences.

3. Set PSE as an default editor in iPhoto and then open images from there.

Do you want to see thumbnails of Raw files in your windows explorer only !

At times, when we have to look at photographs in Windows explorer it's difficult to see thumbnails for our raw files. Organizer is of course a way to explore the files but at times needs is there to go to explorer and figure out some files.

Microsoft has just released "Microsoft Camera Codec Pack" which allows us to see thumbnails in explorer only. Please have a look at the link shared below and share your feedback through comments.

Date/Time problem with latest update of Adobe Camera Raw

Recently a problem has been discovered where time shown for Raw files is not correct. Problem is clearly visible to folks who shoot RAW + JPEG. In this case JPEG and RAW have different times, due to which order changes drastically in Elements Organizer.

Adobe has recently released an article to go to back to ACR 6.3 for some time and wait for next update to come. They are trying to fix this problem in upcoming update.

As of now, this is main concern for people who have following cameras -

  • Canon EOS 600D (Rebel T3i / Kiss X5 Digital)
  • Canon EOS 1100D (Rebel T3 / Kiss X50 Digital)
  • Fuji FinePix S200 EXR
  • Fuji FinePix F550 EXR
  • Fuji FinePix HS20 EXR
  • Fuji FinePix X100
  • Hasselblad H4D-40
  • Kodak Z990
  • Nikon D5100
  • Olympus E-PL1s
  • Olympus E-PL2
  • Olympus XZ-1
  • Samsung NX11
Folks with these cameras need to wait for next update because ACR 6.3 will not work for your raw files. if you click JPEG, then it's not an issue for you.

Check out following link to know how exactly you ca avoid this problem - http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/915/cpsid_91582.html

And note that files need to be re-imported into Organizer to get correct dates. Not all files but the only sets which are imported after updating ACR 6.4/6.4.1

How to switch off Face Recoginition in Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.0

In past few days I have been seeing folks who are done with most of the face recognition activities in their old catalogs and want to switch it off. There are few cases, where folks don't want to use Face recognition because its not an important workflow for them. 1. Launch Elements Organizer
2. Go to Edit Menu and Click on 'Preferences'
3. It will launch Preferences dialog. Now click on Media-Analysis tab.

Adobe Photoshop Elements on LION - Have you tried it?

Although we know that Photoshop Elements is not supported on LION, but there is no harm in trying it. I have seen many folks using it and working fine. Some of the folks have been discussing some issues on LION ... Here we are trying to list down known issues with LION and Adobe Photoshop Elements, with probable workarounds...

I have seen different  forum discussions on Adobe websites and also visited Mac app portals where Photoshop Elements 9.0, 8.0, 6.0 are marked as working application with some users facing some issues which have not very clear understanding if those have workarounds or not.

Please have a look at an article published by ADOBE on LION support by different application - http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/905/cpsid_90508.html

Adobe Photoshop Elements on LION

Did you use your Adobe Photoshop Elements Version on LION? I used my 9th version on LION and so far it's doing good and haven't seen any issue.

I thought of starting this so that folks can share theoir experiences with other versions as well.

As of now, I heard one issue due to which Photoshop Elements crashes on quit. I read more about this problem on web and found that issue is seen on machines which have OnONE installed and OnONE is working to resolve this. Flickr, Facebook upload from Photoshop Elements is not working or Hanged !!!

I am a regular user of Adobe-forums and have been there for last four years approximately. During this period I have seen lot of issues related to Online Services, but most of them sorted out with very small workarounds.

Let's be clear on the main thing - Online-Services : IN Adobe Photoshop Elements, there are many hook-points with some external service providers like Facebook, Flickr etc. All these are called as Online-Services in Adobe Photoshop Elements.

Here are some of the online services which I can think of -
Kodak
Smugmug
Shutterfly
Facebook
Flickr
Youtube
Photostamps
CEVIA

Now if you ever face some problem with any of those, a generic workaround which has worked most of the times for forum-users is to reset preferences for Online Partner Services. Here are some simple steps to follow:-
1. Launch Organizer
2. Open Preferences through Edit Menu or shortcut CTRL+K
3. Go to Online Partner Services
4. Click on 'Clear Online Services Data'
5. Click on 'Reset Accounts'
6. Relaunch Organizer and try !!!

Photoshop Elements - Editor freezes while using Out of Bounds on Win7

Recently I was reading one thread on Adobe Forums where one user was facing some issue while using Out of Bounds feature on Windows-7. Editor used to freeze on clicking 'Add a Frame' option in guided workflow of Out of Bounds.

I like the fact on User forums that folks sincerely help each other and one of the user actually searched for the solution on Forum and shared... Which ultimately worked !!!

Here is the suggested workaround which worked for resolving this problem :-

1. Go to Control Panel of your Windows7
2. Then go to Appearance & Personalisation
3. Choose 'Change Theme'.
4  Then change the theme to 'Windows 7 Basic'.
5. Go back to PSE 9 and try again.
